NEWS10: Empire State Weekly: Correction system update

ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) — New York’s prison system received an update from the New York State Division of Military and Naval Affairs on the ongoing deployment of thousands of troops to state prisons.

This week on Empire State Weekly, Brian Stanley, the Manager of Court Advocacy and Outreach for Avenues for Justice reacted to the continued presence of National Guard troops in state prisons. He said it has contributed to an “us-versus-them” mentality between guards and incarcerated individuals. Stanley also gave insight on the changes he’d like to see made to improve the correction system.

“We have to look at what we are paying people to do the job, that communicates the value and the respect we have for the role,” Stanley said. “We also need to be investing in the mental health and wellbeing of the staff. Ultimately, we need to be looking at solutions and ways to scale the system down, because the bigger it is, the harder it is to oversee.”

Also this week, Assemblyman Robert Carroll, a Democrat who represents the 44th Assembly district, detailed the state’s preliminary effort to bring the Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games back to New York in 2042. The state has launched a study to determine the possible impacts of having the Winter Games in New York, but the state has not launched a formal bid.
