Working for a Just Future: HIRE Up Program

Since AFJ Participant, Michael, was mandated to AFJ with a felony charge, he has taken full advantage of our HIRE Up Program. Michael has received his OSHA-30, Flaggers, and Scaffolding certifications; a Food Handlers license; and has registered for a GED program. In just 8 months, Michael has updated his resume and successfully completed three different internship placements.

HIRE Up has become an integral part of Avenues for Justice’s (AFJ) formula for success. To create a just future, AFJ Participants must imagine a world of opportunities. Our committed small BIPOC-owned businesses and job readiness team help foster career exploration for our Participants, allowing them to dream of a world where they can thrive in careers and industries that fulfill their purpose.

During this season of giving, we hope you will consider making a donation to AFJ, helping to build a just future for court-involved youth across New York City. Your donation makes a huge difference in the lives of our young people and helps us provide the personalized care they need.

If you want to learn more about how funding has been impacted at AFJ over the past year, you can read AFJ's Executive Director Liz Frederick's interview with Nonprofit Quarterly here!

"A fair and just future for me is one where I have real opportunities to succeed without being held back by my background or circumstances. It means having financial stability, a safe place to live, and the ability to build a career without constantly worrying about struggling to survive. In my future, I want support systems that actually help people instead of making life harder. A fair and just future is one where I feel safe, respected, and able to achieve my goals through hard work, not luck or privilege."

AFJ Participant, Vanessa

"A fair and just future looks like achieving your dreams."

AFJ Participant, Mouhamed

"Fair and future looks like a great life. It takes you to be motivated and actually doing something productive in life to be successful and always be focused."

AFJ Participant, Rafael

"(A just future) takes support, resources, good mentors, job opportunities, and people around you who actually want to see you win."

AFJ Participant, Uriah
