Where We Landed in 2022!

Throughout our history, Avenues for Justice (AFJ) has diverted thousands of court-involved and at-risk Participants, ages 13 - 24, from incarceration and re-routed them into our HIRE UP services for job training, mental health wellness, education, case management, tutoring, & more! Our services have consistently led to some of the lowest recidivism rates. This long legacy of success is due to supporters and volunteers like you.

Here’s what your support in championing our Participants and Program made possible in 2022:

Second Chance Experience Gala

After a three year hiatus, due to the pandemic, on October 20, 2022, we hosted our third annual Second Chance Experience at the Phillips Gallery and Auction House. Board members and Program Participants were joined by fellow justice reform activists to celebrate Anastacia, this year’s recipient of AFJ’s Second Chance Award, and Jason Flom, the Founder & CEO of Lava Media and Lava for Good Podcasts. Anastacia, who was initially arrested in 2018 on gang assault charges, received the award for her great strides in turning her life around while at AFJ. Jason Flom received this year’s Andrew Glover Justice Award for his unwavering activism in the fight against the criminal “injustice” system. The event will help put over 40 participants through our program for the entire year of 2023.

Avenues for Justice Way

In May 2022, as a result of a unanimous vote by the New York City Council and Lower East Side Community Board 3, Avenue B by our Community Center was renamed Avenues for Justice Way. Those joining us for the celebration of the new street sign included Manhattan Borough President Mark Levine, State Assembly Member Harvey Epstein, Manhattan District Attorney Al Bragg, with Council Members Carlina Rivera and Gale Brewer.

Please stop by 6th Street and Avenue B to see the sign and if you would like to make an appointment to drop by our Lower East Side Community Center, please email Gamal Willis at gwillis@avenuesforjustice.org
