This April, we recognize both Earth Day and Second Chance Month. For Avenues for Justice (AFJ), this overlap makes sense. The fight for environmental justice and the fight for a just legal system have always been part of the same story. Just as our planet is worth fighting for, at AFJ, we believe the same is true of every young person who comes to us. Our young people don't just deserve opportunity – they deserve clean environments, healthy neighborhoods, and an economy that's built with them in mind.
This year’s Earth Day theme, Our Power, Our Planet, is a reminder that real change begins at the community level. At AFJ, power shows up in many ways. Power is when Katherine (Kat) Estrella, the recipient of our 2025 Second Chance Award, stated "if I can do it, they can do it." Power is when Aaron, an AFJ Participant and sole provider for his daughter, discovers what he's capable of through hard work and support. Power is when Uriah, an AFJ Alumnus, stays focused on a better future because AFJ connected him with the guidance and support he needed.
Power is the result of opportunity and a welcoming environment. Our young people do not need to be defined by past circumstances. They need what they have always deserved: resources, opportunity, and people who believe in them.
April also marks Second Chance Month, a nationally recognized celebration of fresh starts and breaking barriers for people who have been impacted by the legal system. At AFJ, we believe in chances and that real opportunity goes beyond what the legal system can take away.
That's why we center young people by providing wraparound services: job readiness and certification, youth empowerment and legal rights, life skills, mental and physical health support, academic tutoring, and more. We don't just help young people clear a legal hurdle. We walk alongside them as they build the lives they've always been capable of living. As Vanessa, a 2025 AFJ Participant, put it: "A strong community and support system, family, friends, and Avenues for Justice, helps keep me motivated and reminds me I'm not alone."
For the communities we serve, opportunity has to include the environment they come home to. The communities we serve sit at the intersection of multiple systems of inequity, including environmental ones. One of our newest partnerships reflects that. Our HIRE Up program, which offers job readiness training and workforce development, has placed Participant interns with WALTER, a Brooklyn-based certified recycling benefit corporation dedicated to creating jobs in recycling and environmental services for young adults facing barriers to employment.
WALTER's mission is to align environmental impact with economic opportunity, connecting underserved young adults with stable, meaningful careers in the green economy and proving that a better future is not only possible, but scalable.
When young people have access to opportunity, entire communities benefit.

Earth Day reminds us that the future is worth protecting. Second Chance Month reminds us that people are too. At AFJ, we don't separate the two and we invite you to invest in both.
Your support makes it possible for AFJ to serve over 600 young people each year, connecting them to jobs, certifications, mental health support, legal advocacy, and partners like WALTER who are building the green economy from the ground up.
Together, we have the power to transform futures and protect the planet while we're at it.
