Avenues for Justice’s Call-In to Transformational Philanthropy

This week, in the spirit of holiday giving, AFJ handed out gift cards to assist 75 Participants and their families with upcoming Thanksgiving groceries.

Every year, as we enter the giving season, we’re reminded of a simple truth: philanthropy has always fueled social change. From civil rights organizations to community-led movements to local nonprofits like Avenues for Justice (AFJ), progress has always been possible because people at every level chose to give financially.

This year, that truth feels even more urgent. Across New York City, many nonprofits are facing reduced funding while community needs continue to grow. Organizations supporting Black and Brown youth are being asked to do more with less.

At AFJ, we see philanthropy as a shared responsibility. Every gift – large or small—helps build safety, opportunity, and equitable futures for young people.

As a community-rooted organization, it can be challenging in this political climate to connect with funders who remain hesitant to support nonprofits like AFJ. We acknowledge the reality many BIPOC-led organizations face: they receive less funding and have to navigate more restrictions than their counterparts. But rather than centering that imbalance, we are calling funders and individuals into something more powerful—true partnership.

AFJ Participants presented AFJ team members with flowers of gratitude and sparkling apple cider during the Leadership Council's Monday Night of Gratitude.

When funders, corporations, and individuals partner with AFJ, they are investing in transformation.

AFJ’s work with our Participants is making our communities safer, strengthening families, and contributing to a healthier New York City. Our model addresses the root causes of violence through prevention, opportunity, and long-term support.

Our Youth Empowerment Forums, Debate Team, Leadership Council, Art Therapy, and Youth Affirmation Circles strengthen communication skills, confidence, emotional wellness, and leadership. These programs build the protective factors that reduce violence and strengthen communities.

Most importantly, these workshops are not isolated offerings—they are part of a holistic ecosystem that includes:

  • Court advocacy
  • Case management
  • Job readiness
  • Academic support
  • Mental health services
  • Referrals and certifications
Monday's Night of Gratitude, hosted by AFJ’s Youth Leadership Council, included games and a catered holiday meal!

This is what true prevention looks like. This is how cycles break and positive futures can take shape:

AFJ’s Results

Last year, AFJ served 674 court-involved and high-risk youth—and 94% of our ATI Participants were not reconvicted within three years. As of today, AFJ has served 653 Court-Involved and Preventive Participants representing 46 of NYC’s 51 Council Districts. We welcomed 240 new Court-Involved Participants into our community.

This is what transformational philanthropy makes possible.
