Our Centers Are OPEN (by Appointment Only)!

This past week, for the first time since the pandemic began in March 2020, Avenues for Justice (AFJ) re-opened its two community centers in Harlem and the Lower East Side. Our Harlem and Lower East Side community center will be open by appointment only for participants to drop-in, meet with their Court Advocates, and have a safe space to be.*

While our virtual programming will continue including new certification programs in Digital Literacy, OSHA 30, and corporate-led job readiness training in addition to our regularly scheduled workshops, we’re excited to resume face to face counseling sessions as needed.

Some highlights from our community centers this week are:

  • New participants who had never met their Court Advocate in person or been to the centers were excited to meet other youth in the program and see all that our community centers have to offer.
  • We were able to better engage participants in their individual action plan by meeting face to face, some with their parents present.
  • Court Advocates could get a better pulse on the state of each participant by seeing them in person instead of virtually.

AFJ tracks and monitors daily trends at the city and state levels concerning COVID-19 and will adjust our in-person counseling accordingly.

In the coming days, we will be inviting you to our virtual open house so you can see our community centers in action and join a Q&A with our staff. Look out for an announcement with dates and times, as well as a link to join!

*To avoid transmission within the building, staff and participants wore masks at all times, windows were open, temperatures were taken, and each person filled out a COVID-19 screening questionnaire drawn up by the CDC.
